Christmas is such a magical time, especially with children in the house. It is a crazy, busy time too so it is important to take some time out for some family time. When I look back at my childhood there were certain activities that we did together in the run up to Christmas. These happened every year and my Brother, Sister and I looked forward to them. They were as much a part of Christmas as those awful brussels sprouts that Mum made us eat!
I have compiled a list of activities that are perfect to do together as a family on Christmas Eve or in the lead up to Christmas. You might already have one of these as a Christmas Tradition but if not, why not include one this year and make some wonderful memories?
1. Christmas Eve Boxes
These contain a few items to give to the children on Christmas Eve. You can buy very fancy boxes with your surname, or a child's name on, or just use a wooden box with some tinsel wrapped around it. The best things to include are some new pj's, a Christmas film, and a treat such as hot chocolate or popcorn to enjoy with the film. Marshmallows are a lovely treat for you all to enjoy toasting together.
A Christmas story such as 'The night before Christmas' also works really well, If you can put together a bag of reindeer food (some oats and raisins work great) the kids can sprinkle this outside on the lawn. I don't think climbing on the roof is a good idea so the reindeer will pop down into the garden for a snack!
2. Giving a Book
In Iceland there is a tradition of giving books on Christmas Eve and then spending the night reading them. If your children are a bit older the newest book in the series that they love would be a great treat. Make sure you get one for your husband/ wife and they get one for you too. It sounds a lot better than just peeling carrots and stuffing the turkey.
3. Blessing of the Crib Service
The Church of England have a lovely service on Christmas Eve to bless the crib prior to the arrival of Jesus. These are suitable for families and young children are very welcome. To find the times of your local services take a look at the website or Facebook page of your local church.
4. Carolling
Why not spread the Christmas cheer to your neighbours? If you have an elderly neighbour they may really appreciate the thought and you taking some time out of your evening to call around. You could also pop around to Grandma's or your friends to sing them a carol and spread some festive laughter.
5. Track Santa
Where has Santa got too? When is he expected to be passing? There is a link to a tracker below which you can follow during the evening to see where Santa has got to with his deliveries. What fun! There is also lots of other fun things to do on the website.

6. Make a Gingerbread house (and eat it)
You can be very good and make it from scratch, or you can buy a kit from most supermarkets to help. The decoration can be as simple or complicated as you like, so whatever age your children are they can join in. If it all falls apart it doesn't matter as it can still be eaten in lots of bits. Just make sure the kids don't eat all of the pieces covered in icing...you might want one yourself.
7. Film and Popcorn
A Christmas film and some popcorn are a great Christmas Eve treat. There is normally one of two on the television, or you can download one or buy a DVD. You can choose a classic like 'Miracle on 34th Street' or a more modern film. How about 'Best. Christmas. Ever', 'The Velveteen Rabbit' or for older children how about 'The Holdovers'.
8. Make Christmas Dinner for the Birds
How about providing a some treats for the birds ready for their Christmas Dinner. Perhaps some nuts, berries and fruit if you don't have any bird seed. These could be put in a bird feeder or on a bird table.
9. Go for a Walk
Have you had chance to walk around your neighbourhood since all the twinkly lights have gone up. Why not wrap up warm and head out to see who has a light up Santa in their garden or glowing reindeer on the roofs? You might meet a few neighbours and be able to wish them a 'Happy Christmas'.
10. A Family Photo
Christmas Day can be a bit chaotic and getting everyone sat together for a picture could be a bit of a challenge. When you are all together on Christmas Eve, perhaps waiting for the film to start, you can take the pressure off the following day and get a picture of you all together.
